Army Combatives
The Story of Modern Combatives
The story of Modern Combatives really begins in 1995. The Commander of the 2nd Ranger Battalion LTC Stan McChrystal ordered a reinvigoration of martial arts training within the battalion. Although there have been many excellent and innovative combatives teachers in the Army over the years, none of them had never been successful at spreading effective combatives training to the average soldier. As the leaders of the battalion began training, it didn't take long for serious problems with the existing program to surface. There was the feeling among the men that the techniques would not work and that it was a waste of valuable training time.
A committee was formed, headed by SSG Matt Larsen, to develop a program that was more effective. The first step was to examine successful programs from around the world. What was found is that most of them had one thing in common, one underlying reason that the program was successful. Countries with an indigenous national program, Korean Tae-Kwon Do, Japanese Judo, Muay Thai in Thailand, would have much easier time developing an effective combatives program. One exception to this rule is Russia. They are one of the few who take an essentially untrained population, and yet have good success in training their soldiers.

Bio & About Us
Dana Taylor,
Instructor and Owner
I started my training doing Vale Tudo at a local karate school, did that for a few years. During my deployment to Afghanistan I heard of the Modern Army Combatives Program (MACP) out of Ft. Benning. I managed to talk my unit training NCO into letting me go to the school. Me, a 43 year old E-7 with 24 years in service between active and reserve time, not your stereotypical student for this type of course. I survived that 40 hrs of hell and was hooked. Presently I'm a Level IV Master Trainer in Modern Army Combatives, at 47 now with over 27 years in.
I competed in the All National Guard Tournament at Ft. Benning in '08 and plan on competing in the '09 tournament.
I have instructed courses from all over New England, from NH to Conn., certifying well over 100 level 1 instructors. I will be conducting level 2 instructor courses this fall (see upcoming training). I have been awarded a brown belt in BJJ from Midori Yama Budokai and a blue belt from USA Jui Jitsu.
I am currently assigned to the 243d RTI in Narragansett RI. We have a brand new building coming on line in Aug '09, 1600 sq ft, dedicated to just Combatives. I have been awarded a brown belt in BJJ from Midori Yama Budokai and a blue belt from USA Jui Jitsu.
My mantra, if you will is Everyday wear for the everyday warrior because in this day and age we are no longer just Weekend Warriors. National Guard and Reserve soldiers are making up a even larger portion of soldiers that are in Iraq and Afghanistan, we can no longer just wait until called upon, we must be ever ready, we must be warriors in our everyday life.
